Here is a book that describes the Politboro, under Stalin's direction, ordering Frunze to have surgery after his ulcers flared up. (I wouldn't say I'm surprised, but it hadn't occurred to me that the Politboro went around ordering people to have surgery.) Frunze died of chloroform poisoning during the surgery. Many people, understandably, find this suspicious.
I'd guess you're most likely to hear of him as the previous namesake of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Frunze was born there when it was part of Russian Turkestan, and the city was named in his honor from 1926 until the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. Only in 2025 was the IATA code for Manas International Airport changed from FRU to BSZ.
