Frances Richards
Here's the Canadian artist Frances Richards:
William Buell Richards, the first Chief Justice of Canada, was her uncle. Frances painted his portrait:
That portrait still hangs in the Supreme Court of Canada Building, which is on a bluff overlooking the Ottawa River. I'm not sure what I expected the building to look like, but it wasn't Art Deco. I'd say it's both stylish and appropriately grand:
You might be more likely to hear of Frances Richards as a portraitist of Oscar Wilde. The portrait doesn't survive, but a story about it certainly does: Wilde is said to have remarked about how tragic it was that he and not the portrait would grow old, and thus to have been inspired to write The Picture of Dorian Gray.
